Word to the Wired - #7
-- By Julie R. Enszer

Fall and spring compel me to clean. One of the things I have been trying to clean out for the past few months is my hard drive.

It is filled with downloads, documents, and hundreds of mp3s, all of which are clogging up my little Toshiba laptop and giving me less than desirable performance. I've been dumping my documents in internet based back up systems (I'm most fond of driveway.com), but my mp3s are big space hogs, and I haven't found any place to dump them. Until today.

If you have used internet storage systems, you know one of the biggest pains about all of them is spending the time to upload all of those individual files. I spent a good three or four hours backing up my most important documents on driveway.com. It was tedious, but I reminded myself of the frustration of losing documents and bit the bullet to get it done. In my search for storage space, I found driveway.com to be the best overall application for storage on the internet. (I also checked out the competition, most notably idrive.com, which just didn't measure up for me.) Driveway.com was reliably available as a web site and the process of uploading files went without a glitch 95% of the time.

There is a great user interface so it is easy to understand what is going on with the site. Driveway.com starts you out with about 25 MB of storage space and you can earn more by filling out surveys and signing on friends; beyond that though it is time to shell out cold hard cash for more storage. Currently, I have 55 MB of storage. That's a lot of space when you are looking to store documents (word files, excel spreadsheets, and a couple of power point presentations), but when you go into the world of mp3s, that is a paltry amount of storage.

So I talked to all of my geek friends to figure out what to do with these mp3s. Everyone suggested getting a zip drive. That probably is the best and least time consuming option, but frankly I am cheap when it comes to my computer addiction. I didn't want to spend the couple of hundred dollars to get a zip drive. Not to mention the fact that there isn't a spare inch on my desk at home to put the thing, and I was having trouble with my actual mp3 player (I can't get my computer to recognize my player and load songs on it ), so I didn't want to start another peripheral game.

Enter myplay.com. Myplay.com gives you 3 GB (yes, that is 3 gigabytes) of space on the internet to store all of your mp3s. I was impressed with the storage space, but what really got me going about this site was the fact that they have a little download application called DropBox which allows you to copy mp3s from your hard drive to your virtual storage space as a batch.

That sold me. I joined myplay.com. It's free. It has a nice interface and lots of little extras (most of which I haven't explored as I was after the space.) Initially, I uploaded a few mp3s and noticed that downloading them back to my desktop when I needed them resident on my computer again would be a snap. Then I downloaded DropBox. DropBox is a desktop application that allows you to drag and drop whole folders of mp3s to be uploaded to myplay.com in the background. DropBox is about 2,500 KB. I admit, I thought twice about it. The goal here is to get stuff off of my desktop, but I took the plunge. I installed it. And now I am dumping all of my mp3s (which I have spent hours carefully scouring the internet for and compiling them into my favorites old and new) into my account at myplay.com. It is amazing. I'm looking at freeing up over 750 MB of space on my hard drive. I hardly know what I'll do with all of the new space on my hard drive! (OK, I'll probably download more little applications and more mp3s, but I've bought myself more time and hours of more fun and internet exploration!)

So, check out myplay.com and rock on with adding more mp3s to your collection!
