Word to the Wired - #6
-- By Julie R. Enszer

Did you buy your Palm yet? I hope so. And I hope you have it up and running because I'm going to share my favorite two applications for the palm with you.

(If you resisted my exhortations to get a Palm from the last installment, read on for further selling points of the delights of PDAs).

AvantGo is a nifty little program that clips web pages for you and loads them onto you Palm for viewing when you sync up your Palm. AvantGo has hundreds of channels from which you can choose which provide a broad range of news and information that you can select based on news and information you want. Every time I sync my Palm, I get a couple sections of the New York Times, headlines from the Industry Standard, articles from Salon and Slate, money tips from Bank of America, and a couple of other channels. AvantGo also is integrated with mapquest.com. When I go there to get directions, I click a button that prepares it to download to my PDA the next time I sync. No more printing of those pesky pages and searching for them in the car when I need directions and as an added bonus, I can prepare my directions in advance so I am not chronically ten minutes late for appointment. Far and away, however, the best thing about AvantGo is that when you sync all of the information you didn't read just disappears. No guilt about not reading something and no newspapers to recycle.

Vindigo is my newest Palm application discovery. Vindigo aggregates information from Zagat and other local community directors and integrates them into their easy to use Palm application. You install it and sync it up and Vindigo provides you with walking directions for where to eat and where to shop in the city you are in. With Vindigo , I found out that there is a Colorado Pen Company about 1.5 miles from my house (it could have taken me two years to figure that out). When I traveled to San Francisco, we used it at every intersection and found a lovely French bistro just 750 yards away from our hotel (we had a lovely, romantic dinner). Currently, Vindigo is supporting five cities including Washington, DC, San Francisco, and New York City, if you live there or travel there, Vindigo is a must.

There are thousands of other neat Palm applications. The challenge is, of course, finding them. That is where my hot link of this edition of Word to the Wired comes in. Handango.com . Handango is like a portal for Palm applications. Lots are free some require a modest payment after you decide to keep it. Check it out and let me know the great applications you find.
