HATEFUL HEARTS
10/18/01

There are so many things to be said after September 11th's attacks. I thought an interesting point of discussion might be the persecution of Muslims sparked by the attacks and how un-Christian that is. However, when I received an email from a friend back in Nebraska with some remarks from the Reverend Jerry Falwell, I knew I needed to share them with this audience.

We are all familiar with Jerry's anti-gay remarks in the past. After all, he was one of the first in the 80's to say that GRID (gay related immune deficiency, now known as AIDS) was God's punishment for homosexuals. Jerry also was the one who accused teletubby, Tinky-winky of being gay. I could go on, but this recent bit of gay bashing, really shows how low Jerry can go.

Jerry, on Pat Robertson's 700 Club, September 13, 2001 said the following about the bombings:

"The ACLU's got to take the blame for this. And I know that I'll hear from them for this. But, throwing God or successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say: You helped this happen."

Perhaps it was the testosterone between he and Pat that provoked these comments, kind of like a locker room; maybe it was his anger, but I prefer not provide him with any type of excuse. I dare say that Jerry's comments come from his heart filled with hate. It must be hard to live the way that Jerry lives. Can you imagine spending each day directing hateful and angry comments at nearly every group in the U.S. short of white, Christian, men and their submissive wives? Can you imagine standing in front of a 20,000 member congregation each week, yet being so distant from the heart of Jesus Christ whom you claim to represent? Can you imagine making such ignorant claims on a regular basis, but even worse-knowing that so many people believe you? If this doesn't scare you, I don't know what will.
