Techno Dyke of the Month presents: Dany & Dyxploitation!
As Channel 69 was winding down, my girlfriend Ande Whyland and I started a Saturday night party at the Pyramid called The Ball. The concept was a mixed gay and lesbian party and it was surprisingly successful. Our crowd was truly mixed, about 50/50, and we were one of the first clubs to feature drag king entertainers, including Ian Black, who went on to infamy as a featured bank robber on America's Most Wanted. Drag superstar Dred was also a regular - well, not in drag but she did go-go dance for us as a girl pretty often. We also were the first Manhattan club to book The Murmurs. They played at our party numerous times.
After I finally got tired of working in clubs, I took some time off to go to college, of all things. I enrolled full-time into City College's architecture program. While there, I had a history class where we were required to do all our research on the Internet. I had been online before just a few times but spending so much time looking at web sites gave me ideas. I realized I could do a zine for no money! Needless to say, I didn't complete the architecture program. A year and a half into it, I quit, got a day job and started working on the concept of Dyxploitation. Even though I had spent so much of my time working with guys and drag queens, I decided that whenever there is a mixed thing, the girls tend to fade into the background. My webzine would be something just for the girls. I launched the first issue of Dyxploitation, Gay Shame, on Gay Pride Day 1998. Previous | Next
