Techno Dyke of the Month presents: Rachel Venning & Babeland.Com
And the web will spread the revolution even faster. We got the domain name babeland.com in 1996. That was like "playing web." We made the site about things we were into at the time. We put up sex advice questions and answers, stories, reviews of events we'd been to and things like that. Our idea was that it was an on-line 'zine, and we didn't really see it as a business tool. But it became clear that it would be great if people could get sex toys from us over the web, because that is what they wanted from our site. We were lucky in that we had a really generous ISP in Seattle who helped us get an out of the box shopping cart and to set up our first version of the on-line store. From there we've gone through various versions of the site, and seen the whole project go from being an outlet for self expression to being a commercial enterprise with a staff and a warehouse. One of the tricky things for us is that we started with a goal of creating a place where dykes would feel at home, be central and that our queerness would be celebrated. As we get more people of all types, especially straight women, we're constantly balancing our desire to be fantastic for dykes with our desire to reach more people. So it's grown from the sex toys for dykes model to our current goal of promoting and celebrating sexual vitality for all of us. But for us dykes will always be front and center- it's more fun that way. Rachel Venning can be reached at rachel@babeland.com Previous | End
