"Drag" In, Dragged Out
- By Stacy Bias

What kind of support are you receiving from your friends, family and the local LGBT community?

One of my friends from school has dumped me and she didn't really tell me why. I haven't seen a lot of my friends from school for a long time and it's really hard. Most of my other friends have been really supportive. My mom is supportive about both the gay thing and the trans thing but she is not as supportive with the trans thing as she could be but she is working really hard on it and getting better. My dad is okay with the gay thing but is totally against the trans thing. He works at a college and says that if I want free tuition when I go there, I must follow his dress code. I have gotten overwhelming support from the LGBTQ community. I have gotten so much support from people at SMYRC and in e-mails commending me for my courage.

Do you consider your style of dress and refusal to modify your behavior at the school's request were more an attempt to make a point of activism, or were you simply just refusing to be anyone but yourself?

It may have been partly out of activism because I don't think anyone should have to go through this but the main reason is because I think I should be able to dress however I want as long as it doesn't hurt anyone and it follows the dress code. I don't think it should make any difference what gender someone dresses as. Whether the person is a boy dressed as a girl, a girl dressed as a boy or anything in-between. The school has no right to force their gender roles on to its students.
