The Summer for Vermont
- By Holly Farris  Mothering and other duties caused them to return home right after the ceremony, but Marcia says their welcome might have influenced them to stay in town to honeymoon. "Besides," she says, "we felt first-day publicity should go to those who fought for it in Vermont."
Their lives are relatively unchanged after July. Civil union fit into the plan this family has for itself, which made this their summer FOR Vermont. Rhode Island is a decent state in regard to anti-discrimination laws, but "we'd like to send a copy of our certificate and say, hey, we think you should recognize this." Raising their family, working, going to school, is what they continue to do, but "part of this is that we put ourselves out there as a family". In a way, Jill and Marcia took a radical step this summer, for the most non-radical of reasons: validation. Integrity as a family, continuity as a couple, intersected with their need for personal freedom. "Equality is going to come, one person at a time, talking to the folks on the playground, the soccer field, the PTA," says Marcia. Thanks for your wisdom, ladies.
