Throws Like a Winner Review of the performance series, Throws Like A Girl - By Miss Xanna Don't Austin is a city in transition. The high tech boom here has impacted the Live Music Capitol of The World, our city's official slogan, in positive and less than positive ways. Skyrocketing property values have made some longtime homeowners willing to sell very wealthy, but have displaced original music nightclubs and struggling musicians.
There's economic growth, but also the general feeling in the music community is that these transplanted high tech people "just don't get it." The Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce has recognized this and started a think tank, of which I'm a member, to bridge the gap between the musicians and the techies and attempt to revive Austin's dying music scene. So far, these think tank meetings are filled with the differing opinions of well meaning people and it looks like progress will be slow. A local computer company, whose profits are up 350% according to our only daily newspaper, The Austin American-Statesman, is dangling a one million dollar carrot above our twitching noses to placate their tone-deaf guilt. Meanwhile, I represent Austin's largest gay nightclub, The Rainbow Cattle Company, in an effort to persuade South By South West to host the first-ever gay music showcases in the internationally renowned music conference's history. Their selection committee has mixed feelings about it.
