Making it Beautiful;
An interview with Sara Lee

- By Nicole Blizzard

N- The first time that I started to notice you and was with the release of The B-52's blockbuster album, "Cosmic Thing"and the subsequent video for the hit single "Love Shack", which featured a scene with you in a tub of champaign.

S- (laughs) Yes.

N- What was it like to work with them?

S- Well, it was absolutely fantastic. I still work with them. It was so much fun. They were, at that particular point in time, just happy to be working again. Ricky (Wilson, one of the founding members) had passed away in 1986 and I think that for a couple of years, they really were not sure if they were going to continue as band. So at the point at which I joined them, they had written the songs, they were getting ready to record the album, and there was this whole sense of new life surrounding the band. They were very happy and excited to be playing together again. We made the record and when we started touring, we started off in very small clubs, five hundred seaters. The fans were so happy to see The B-52's back again. That as well contributed to the general air of joy and excitement. Of course, they had this sort of meteoric rise to fame, or success, with the "Love Shack" single which sort of propelled us from those small little clubs to arenas and stadiums really within sort of four or five months. This was a very exciting thing to be a part of because the reception of The B-52's was so great you know. People loved them. When you're getting that level of energy back from an audience, it's a tremendously exciting thing. So really, the whole process of that record to the live shows, to the success of the single, was so exciting to be involved with and the people in the band I love. They're great people. They're very committed to certain environmental issues and vegetarianism. We have things in common and I really enjoy working with them. I still do. They're a good bunch of people and a lot of fun. Fred (Schneider) still makes me laugh at every show. After twelve years, I'm still laughing at what he does on stage. He's the funniest person I've ever worked with.
