REMEMBERING DUSTY, An Interview with Rebekah Radisch
- By Nicole Blizzard

When British pop legend Dusty Springfield died early last year from breast cancer many people around the world mourned her death. One woman in Durham, North Carolina though had already been planning a tribute album to celebrate her music and the influence it had on her and many of her female musician friends. In May of this year, the CD "Forever Dusty, Homage To An Icon" was released on the newly formed R & D RecorDs and it has been getting a lot of praise from critics as well as Dusty's fans.

Rebekah Radisch had been toying with the idea of starting her own label to release the kind of women's music that she had been championing for years in many various positions. When she and her label partner, Jennifer Delaney, were tossing around ideas as to what their first project would be, the name of Dusty Springfield was the one that they kept coming back to.

During the sixties, Rebekah's father was stationed in the Marshall Islands and it was there that she grew up listening to Armed Forces Radio. AM radio was her friend and she would hear Dusty Springfield's songs in between the songs of The Doors, Frank Sinatra, the Beatles, Vicki Carr, the Monkeys, the Association, and even the local indigenous music of the islands. She even had her radio debut at the age of seven when her sister was flirting with the deejay and she screamed while he was on the air. Thus a career in music was born. Many years later, she enjoyed local success with her on-air persona, Jenny Clash, for the student station WXYC, which she did for nine years.
