"Ode to a Gym Teacher" Revisited - By Ravigo Zomana
She was the one I turned to when I was in grad school and my heart was broken by an ex who didn't want to have to make the sacrifices needed to be a closeted lesbian. I had seen Ms. B at the vet when I took the kitten my ex had given me to be checked (the kitten had feline leukemia and needed to be put down); she was in a hurry but saw that something was bothering me and told me to meet her at the school the next day. I went, but there were end of school year issues to be dealt with, and I wound up seeing her, in the staff parking lot, for only a few moments. I started telling her, in gender neutral terms, about the demise of the relationship when she interrupted me. "Was this with a woman?" she asked. Hesitating for a second, I replied in the affirmative. "Well, alright!" she exclaimed. "I mean, I'm sorry that you were hurt, but I'm glad that you're at least dating the right gender! Call me at home later and we'll talk more" We have kept in touch ever since. On a visit home a few years ago, I spent an afternoon with Ms. B and her partner, talking about life, love and the world in general.
