OUT LOUD: The Sundance Channel Celebrates Pride Month - By Shosho Glowing reviews and entertainment aside I just want to bring up some issues to think about as you curl up on the couch with your buddies/cat/girlfriend/throw pillow:
Out Loud includes films that are considered gay and lesbian themed. Some inclusions in this are a little confusing - Breaking the Waves, for instance. While this film is one of my all time favorites - Adrian Rich's lesbian continuum theory would have to be stretched to its absolute ends to include this as a lezzie flick. I really don't see the gay male theme. So is it that unhealthy het relationships or mental instabilty = gay and lesbian themed? Gay filmmaker = gay film? Is that true - was it ever? And if they really want to extend the range of what is considered gay film - why did Sundance stop short of actually calling it a queer film festival? Hmmm Cable is expensive, so are movie tickets. Lots of us queer folks are poor and this is a very expensive media/art form to work in - and view. What is the responsibility of film festivals and Cable networks to those of us with limited access to these shows? Does every queer art form need to be universally accessible to view?
