OUTFEST 2000 - REVIEWS - By Shosho Scholar

Julie and Me (Revoir Julie)
The power of first love can be so timeless that it spans decades. REVOIR JULIE is the story of Juliet, a striking Stephanie Morgenstern (2 SECONDS), who keeps revoir Julie (to see Julie again) at the top of her list of things to do. After completing the other tasks on her list, Juliet begins her trek to the picturesque Canadian countryside to visit her long-lost childhood friend and schoolmate, whom she hasn't seen in 15 years.
Wow - I am not a sucker for lesbian sentimental stories of falling in love with your childhood crush, but this one got me. Jean Crepeau created character that were both complicated and smart and endearing and everything else just fell into place after that. Juliet and Julie meet again after years and years and have an ideal visit; Juliet tells charming and absurd stories constantly to Julie's great amusement while they walk around their childhood village. I have to admit a bit of Canadian homesickness hit me when I watched this film, but I didn't love it until the Julie and Juliet had to work through the difficult ‘romance or friendship' question. Julie was extremely embarrassed and Juliet was upset in that oh so familiar juvenile humiliating way that just makes you want to cringe and hug her. The characters were very credible and their relationship was lovely – not saccharine in the least.
