Holiday Schmoliday!

My mom is Catholic and my dad is Jewish and so I never really had one way of doing things based on faith. We had a Christmas tree, true, but it was often referred to as a Chanukah bush. Christmas Eve was a must-attend evening of food and drink, but it mostly felt like a party. By midnight everyone was high, whether on alcohol or sugar. When my mom told me how much Christmas Eve meant to her, I was kind of surprised to hear that it had a spiritual bent for her too-she kept it so inside herself. But it hammered home that there are many ways to commemorate special days. One thing I know for sure, I am spending the holiday with people who value others and are grateful for all that they have in this rich life-or who at least can make an effort to see things that way (read: not my parents!). I intend to spend the holidays with friends and family who revel in the spirit of sharing and giving at this time of year. And my mixed background insures that it will be a multi-culti event. My wife is Jewish and we are celebrating the wealth of our world with our second annual Chanukah party. That means latkes (potato pancakes) for everyone! We are trying out some doughnut recipes too. Our first jelly doughnut attempt was a supreme failure, but sure made me appreciate my Krispy Kremes!
