Season of Getting?
- By Ravigo Zomana Other parents, strung-out or high on drugs, or just unable to control their tempers, beating their children senseless, and our court system allowing them to retain custody. Or, even in the relatively few instances where custody is removed, being allowed visitation unsupervised, giving additional opportunities for them to, willfully or not, harm the child again.
Galvanizing support for the GLBT community requires that a shocking, horrible event occurs. A person who claimed to be a Capitol Hill lobbyist told a small group of us that it takes something like the death of Matthew Shepard to get support for our causes. Even the shooting in a Roanoke, Virginia gay bar in September did not garner much support from outside the GLBT community. The recent national election fiasco that has shown the rest of the world how truly petty we are. Americans may think that we're magnanimous with our global policies and assistance, but what goes on at home, as it were, is more telling of who we are. It doesn't matter who is elected at this point: we'll have a President for the next four years, but we will not have a winner. International negotiations are not going to be pleasant: "Well, if your opponent had - rightly - been placed in your position, this would have been settled by now."
