Amy Ray Interview
- By Madalyn

Amy Ray of Daemon Records

GG: (laughs) That's great advice!

AR: I mean, it's really simple but a lot of people don't think of it. But it doesn't work as well for some things, some publications don't want to review your record unless you take an ad out, which is kind of stupid, but then there's the smaller indie publications that you want to support so you do take ads out. There's like all these rules about who you support with your money and who you don't. You know, who doesn't need it as bad?

GG: Right.

AR: Just kind of like nurturing your community and your environment and the thing that you're part of. And when you're helping them you're helping yourself, you know? It's a lot of community vision kinda stuff that I think we have to have as an indie label or we're not gonna be nurturing the place where we're trying to grow. So, those things I definitely have learned. I've learned a lot about how to work with artists. I'm an artist, but it doesn't mean I understand how to work with artists, you know? And so, I've had to really learn about that, like different personalities and, I think the biggest thing is just really having firm boundaries and not getting taken advantage of without realizing it so that there's resentment later. Because, I don't want to hurt my friendships either because most the people I work with are friends. The artists are, and I want to keep it that way. I think you have to have a lot of solid agreements because neither one wants to feel like they didn't know what was gonna go on.
