Backstage With the Girls
An Evening with Melissa Ferrick
- By Nicole Blizzard

At one point while she was getting some coffee for her and the guys, we started talking about guilty pleasures in music. Mine is that I love Bananarama. Her's was The Bangles. She told how she was so happy when one of The Bangles played on her debut album. She showed me the new lighter that Brynn had bought her with a silhouette Elvis Presley on it. She told me that the first two albums she had ever bought were "Blondie" and "Elvis-Live In Vegas". I mentioned how the song "Jailhouse Rock" has what sounds like a queer lyric to it and she agreed. She says that she's thinking about doing a cover of "Jailhouse Rock" one day.
During the sound check, Melissa played a song that she has been working on titled "Shatter Me". As she played it, she was revising it during the rehearsal, changing keys and deleting a section to make it tighter and flow better. It was so cool to be privy to this kind of creative moment. After sound levels were done, Melissa took a break to get a little rest before the show.
As the people started to come in, I took a few minutes to talk to some of the fans who were there, such as a young girl named Samantha Harker. Samantha was a fan from Philadelphia who had come over for the show. She had already seen Melissa twice before that year and was looking forward to the show that night. She had had a chance to speak to Melissa earlier and was so thrilled. Samantha was right in front of the stage all night.
After singer-songwriter Dan Bern and his band finished their opening set (he is a favorite of Melissa and her group), the time had come for Melissa and Brian to take the stage. I was ready for the show and to take pictures. I was given permission to shoot photos during the show, which is the first time this girl has ever done that; get permission that is.
