This Is A Test 12/07/00 Challenges in one form or another form the stuff of many dreams. Contests, competition, or other measures of ourselves against the norm pop up in circumstances so distracting within dreams--and real life--that it's difficult to see the core. A test is occurring, make no mistake. Like emergency readiness messages on radio, they startle. Cindy writes: "A dream years ago included my next-door neighbors as mad scientists doing weird experiments on my cat in their garage! Into this scene came about a hundred 2-feet high skeletons with hair. One spoke to me, then my family ran to my aunty's house and I flew away. When I looked down, I'd flown out of a magazine." What could be more normal than the individuals within Cindy's dream? She stars, plus next-door neighbors and her family. But wait! They're all weird, although the skeletons appearing with hair makes them more human. This dream takes the pulse of suburbia. Family and friends are being measured against an ideal, possibly seen or inferred from a magazine or another symbol of idealized normalcy. Cindy's family and surrounding people are normal she knows, but she pushes the question.
