BEST LESBIAN EROTICA 2001
(Cleis)
review by Nicole Blizzard
Released recently by Cleis Press, "Best Lesbian Erotica 2001" is the sixth in a series, all of which have been edited by Tristian Taorimo, who is also an editor for the magazine "On Our Backs". For this year's edition, Tristian has chosen to work with Patrick Califia-Rice, who as many TechnoDyke readers know is a transgendered male with many lesbian books to his credit.
This is one fierce and terrific collection of erotic stories guaranteed to get many readers all hot and bothered. As pointed out in the foreword by Tristan, "This anthology has always been about pushing at boundaries, but the trick is that those boundaries are always changing." This time around, many of the stories are playing with the issues of gender inside the lesbian community, especially concerning the ideas of butch and femme. Some stories will have you grabbing your girlfriend and running to the bedroom, while some you might find disturbing in their perspective. But in either case, one thing is for certain: you will never be bored.
In "Business Casual", Lauren Sanders paints the story of an artist who has to work nights as a data processor and meets a business woman on the way up. In "If You Can Make It There, You Can Make It Anywhere", A.J. Stone tells the story of two very feminine women who have been friends for years and realize that they can be even more. In "F", Karen Pomerantz shows us that just because a girl is femme, she can be anything but weak. In "Lipstick", Aimee Nichols shows how a lesbian at a straight girl's Hen's Night can have a little fun in the ladies room. And in Shar Rednour's "How to Fuck in High Heels", we get some practical instruction on how to make those demon shoes work for us.
